Murky News write-up on BPL (Broadband over Power Lines)

Looks like we’re getting closer to my goal of not rewiring my house and yet still being able to network my home without the benefit of WiFi (see this entry about my new computer). The San Jose Mercury News had an article (registration required, I think) in this morning’s paper about networking your computers using your home’s power lines and another article about power companies connecting homes to the Internet.

Could not get to Murky through your link, but went direct (I am registered) and found the articles.
Re: using home power lines for network, I’m from Missouri on that. Guess I was burnt trying a prior generation. So I will defer to you to pioneer this new version. I am far from an electrical engineer, but do know something about noise and surges.
Re: Internet via power companies, that is running here (Deb’s brother lives a mile from DSL and Cable) and it seems to work, though there have been many outages and it isn’t real fast. I would see it ONLY as an option if you are in the boonies with no broadband.

The old version of the HomePlug network had quite a few problems but, still, worked well enough for a lot of people. It’s not fast enough for me which is why I’ve been waiting for HomePlug AV. We’ll see what the true early adopters say. I’m not adventurous enough to try it out without some references.
